Schwinden, Thompson spark Panners victory
By ADAM RAEDER, Staff Writer
Chris Schwinden pitched eight scoreless innings and Mark Thompson continued
to provide an offensive spark as the Alaska Goldpanners beat the Anchorage
Bucs 9-1 Saturday at Growden Memorial Park.
Schwinden, who allowed one run through nine innings in his last start,
spread five hits over eight innings while striking out three.
"(Schwinden) mixed speeds on us," said Bucs head coach Mike Garcia. "He did
a really nice job of throwing first-pitch strikes with all three of his
pitches. He kept us off balance. He did a nice job."
The low strike out total was all part of Schwinden's strategy--let them hit
the ball and trust your defense to do the rest.
"I'm trying to let them hit the ball," Schwinden said. "I'm trying to let
them get themselves out, and they did."
The strategy worked well for Schwinden, who had good break to his curveball,
giving plenty of chances to a Panners defense that committed five errors
Friday but played mistake-free baseball Saturday.

And according to Schwinden, it's the defense and not him that deserves the
credit.
"I could have been better," Schwinden said. "On 0-2 pitches, I could have
put them in better spots. All in all, our offense did great and our defense
was there with me."
The offense was spurred on by leadoff hitter Thompson, whose ability to get
on base has helped the Panners break out of their batting slump.
"Thompson is getting it done; his on-base percentage is incredible," said
Panners head coach Ed Cheff. "That's a key thing, if you can get the leadoff
hitter going."
Thompson reached base in four of his five at-bats, scoring three runs and
driving in two more.
"I'm feeling good right now," Thompson said. "I'm just trying to stay hot
right now. Hopefully I can string off some more hits, and hopefully some
more wins as well."
Thompson, who admits to crowding the plate, got things started for the
Panners in the bottom of the first, as Bucs starter You Lin-Po's first pitch
hit Thompson in the small of the back.
Thompson stole second, and scored the Panners' first run on a single up the
middle by left fielder Mike Lissman.
The Panners broke the game open in the fourth inning.
After right fielder Chris Fox was hit by a pitch to start the inning,
Jovanny Bramasco sacrificed him over to second, and second baseman Lan
Shao-Bai walked to put runners at first and second.
The two runners scored when Thompson drove a 2-1 You offering to deep left
center field for a triple.
Two batters latter, Lissman picked up his second RBI on the night, driving
in Thompson after beating out a bunt back to the pitcher.
It marked the end of the night for You, who allowed four runs on five hits
through 3 2/3 innings.
"I'm very disappointed," Garcia said of You, who entered the game with a
2.17 ERA, best among Bucs starters. "He did not compete at all. He went
through the motions; he was basically a very average pitcher. He got off to
a rough start and never recovered."
The Bucs only got three runners into scoring position during Schwinden's
eight innings and only threatened to score in the top of the seventh.
Bucs first baseman Jason Castro lead off the inning by lacing a single to
right field, and advanced to third on a Robert Taylor single. But Schwinden
got catcher Kyle Henson to ground out to second, ending the threat.
The Bucs picked up their one run in the ninth inning off reliever Brad
Schwarzenbach, when right fielder Bryan Petersen doubled to lead off the
inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Rylan Sandoval.
It took awhile, but Thompson said that taking this series from the Bucs
showed that the Panners were back on the right track.
"I think we're starting to put things together," Thompson said. "We started
off a little slow, but we're starting to pull it together, and buy into how
we're going to play baseball up here."
