The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks blew a golden opportunity to climb back into the Alaska Baseball League pennant race on Wednesday night at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
Leading 7-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Goldpanners bullpen was rocked for seven runs and the Anchorage Glacier Pilots rallied to claim a 9-7 victory, snapping the Panners' four-game winning streak.
If the Panners would have won the game, they would have moved to within 1 1/2 games of the league-leading Mat-Su Miners, who suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Anchorage Bucs on Wednesday night in Palmer.
Instead, the Panners fell to 9-9 in the ABL and remained 2 1/2 games behind the Miners (13-8). The Pilots reached the .500 mark with the win (10-10) and are tied for fourth place with the Panners.
The Peninsula Oilers of Kenai, who suffered a 8-2 loss to the last place Athletes In Action Fire at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks, are in second place with a 12-8 record and the Bucs hold down the third spot at 12-9.
The Pilots' rally in the eighth capped a wild contest that saw eighth different players get hit by pitches.
Goldpanner starter Kevin Hernandez hit three pilots and walked two others in 3 2/3 innings of work, while Goldpanner batters were hit five times.
The Pilots led 2-1 through six innings when the Panners erupted for five runs in the seventh and added another in the eighth to take a 7-2 advantage, but it wasn't enough as Anchorage came storming back in the bottom of the inning to score seven times off Panner relievers Jake Hower, Will Morgan and Brian Bird.
Anchorage's Lucas Waters clubbed a two-run homer to cap the rally ad provide the winning margin. Morgan was tagged with the loss even though Bird game up the game-winning home run.
The Panners managed seven hits in the game, led by Chris Fox, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Chu Yuan-Chin was 1-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs.
Armed with a 9-7 lead, the Pilots turned to closer Casey Weathers, who worked a perfect ninth inning and recorded two strikeouts to earn the save.
The Panners and Pilots meet again at 7 tonight and close out their three-game series at 7 p.m. on Friday.
