Panners get split of doubleheader
Sean Timmons came to the rescue for the Alaska Godlpanners once again on
Sunday as he tossed a four-hit shutout that enabled the Panners to gain
a split of their Alaska Baseball League doubleheader with the Mat-Su
Miners at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
After
Mat-Su posted a 5-1 victory in the seven-inning opener, the Panners came
back to win the nine-inning nightcap 1-0.
The split enabled the Panners to inch closer to the top spot in the
ABL standings even though they are still in fifth place heading into
tonight’s game against the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium in
Anchorage.
In other ABL games Sunday, the Bucs knocked off the Peninsula Oilers
8-3 and the Anchorage Glacier Pilots topped the Athletes in Action Fire
7-3 at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.
The Oilers (14-9) and pecentage points ahead of the Miners (15-10) as
the two teams open a four-game series in Peninsula tonight. Meanwhile,
the Bucs (14-11) are one game off the pace, while the Pilots (12-10) at
1 1/2 games back and the Panners (11-11) at 2 1/2 games off the pace.
Weather permitting, each team will play 35 games by the time the season
is over at the end of the month.
Timmons scattered four singles, walked two and recorded five
strikeouts in posting the win to keep the Panners at the .500 mark in
the ABL season.
The Panners scored the only run they needed in the sixth inning when
Joe Persichina walked, stole second, moved to third at Beau Mills and
Dick Knutz were both hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Mike
Lissman.
Lissman had three of the Panners eight hits in the game and
Persichina had two. Four Panner batters were hit by pitches with Knutz
getting plunked twice.
