KAMLOOPS, BC- It’s been over 30 years since the Goldpanners last won a Kamloops International Baseball Tournament, but the wait was well worth it. The Goldpanners won three games on Sunday to capture the championship, culminating with a thrilling 5-3 victory over the Everett Merchants.

Despite holding the lead from the 6^th inning on, the game certainly had its excitement, as the Goldpanners held off two late rallies from the Everett.

Carey Schwartz was one of many heros for the victors, as the pitcher from Stanford University came through with three big outs in the 9^th inning to get the save.

The inning started with Derek Speigner- a winner earlier in the day against the Seattle Studs- starting off by walking the first two batters of the inning. Coach Jim Dietz came to the mound and relieved Speigner who got out of a big jam himself the previous inning with Schwartz.

With two on and no out, Schwartz got the first batter Nick Meehan out on a sacrifice bunt, although it put both runners in scoring position. Schwartz got the next batter to pop out, setting up a showdown with pinch hitter Evan Churlin.

Schwartz battled with Churlin, before getting him to pop out to end the game, and seal the championship.

Offensively, the Goldpanners got off to a slow start, but got it going in the 6^th inning.

The big knock came in the form of Josh Ashenbrenner’s 2-RBI double, plating both Phil Parrish and Trent Olezsczuk, tying the game at 2-2.

Midnight Sun’s offense was hardly done however, as just two batters later, David Duetchman plated Ashenbrenner giving the Goldpanners a 3-2 lead. A Mykal Stokes single later made it 4-2.

The Goldpanners scored their final run of the game, later when Phil Parrish scored on an Ashenbrenner RBI double.

Of note, several players took home hardware in the tournament’s trophy presentation.

The Goldpanners will continue their summer “Alaska 50 Tour,” Monday, when they travel to Kelowna, to take on the Kelowna Falcons. Game-time is set for 7 p.m.
