PALMER,AK- At this time of year every team in the Alaskan Baseball League starts a little bit shorthanded. The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks are no exception, and it showed in their season opener Thursday night, in a 5-1 loss to the Mat-Su Miners.

The Goldpanners- playing with just five true position players- were kept off balance all night by Mat-Su starter David Stilley and made two crucial errors in the field, spoiling the opener of their 50^th Anniversary season. Stilley went seven innings, giving up just three hits and unearned while striking eight, and let his offense do the rest.

After a one, two, three first inning, Mat-Su’s bats quickly found life in the second.

Jonathan Cisneros started the rally against Alaska starter David Colvin with a double down the line, and after a walk and steal, scored on a fielders choice. Two of the next three batters reached, with Mat-Su scoring its second run on a Nick Cox single. Mat-Su scored its final run of the second inning, when Jordan LeGros- playing in the field for the time during the 2009 season- made an a throwing error which pulled first baseman Derek Grieve off the bag.

Evan Simonitsch started the Goldpanner’s only scoring rally at the beginning of the second with a walk in his second at bat. After a Jarod Berrgren single advanced the speedy Simonitsch to third, the Loyola Marymount outfielder scored on a wild pitch.

Unfortunately it was the last true life the Goldpanners bats showed for the remainder of the game. David Alleman led off the Miners fourth inning with a single, before ultimately scoring on a passed ball, beyond the reach of Alaska catcher Bobby Davis. Mat-Su added an unearned run in the seventh, to dictate the final outcome.

For the Goldpanners, it was a tough loss to open the season, in a game which only 11 players suited up for the ballclub. With three future Panners playing in the College World Series this weekend, and several others finishing classes, the team was shorthanded with several players playing out of position.

Colvin was the hard luck loser in the opener for the Panners, giving up 3 earned runs in 5 innings pitched. Alex Gillingham looked sharp in relief, giving up just one unearned run, while striking out four in three innings of relief.

While the loss was tough, the Goldpanners will have to quickly bounce back, as they play three games in Anchorage this coming weekend. The Goldpanners will play the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Friday and Saturday, with both games starting at 7 p.m., and follow up with a Sunday afternoon game against the Anchorage Bucs. Game time Sunday is 2 p.m.
