Baseball Under the Midnight Sun

If you're going to Alaska next summer try to arrange to be in Fairbanks on the night of the Summer Solstice, June 22.  You can be a part of the 2500 plus fans who stay up until 2:30 a.m. to watch the Midnight Sun baseball game.   No artificial lighting is allowed.

Fairbanks' Alaska Goldpanners, for years one of the top amateur teams in the country, defeated the Tahoe California Stars 9-8 on a two-out homer by Brett Backlund of the University of Iowa in the 1991 contest.

For 85 years Fairbanks has hosted the Midnight Sun game, starting at 10:30 p.m. and in 1991 ending at 2:30 with Backlund's blast.

Former Goldpanners familiar to Brewer fans are Dan Plesac, Don August and Chuck Hartenstein.  Well-known major leaguers Graig Nettles, Dave Winfield, Al Davis and Tom Seaver are among the players who have been Goldpanners.   According to the Fairbanks Daily News Miner, Bill Dunckel of San Diego State is being considered by major league teams including the Brewers.

Before the game I had handed a baseball with the Brewer logo on it to one of the players who started passing it around for "49er's" autographs.     At the end of the game when I tried to retrieve the ball, it had disappeared.  Since a Brewer logo was distinctive in Alaska, the players looked in vain.  At last, Jim Dietz, the San Diego State/Goldpanners coach came over and said "The consensus is that there was a sticky-fingered six year old near the dugout and he probably has the ball."  Then Mr. Dietz gave me an official Alaska League ball and told me to come back to the Sunday night game assuring me that he would see to it that it would be autographed and not "lost".  He did.  Then on the Alaska plane to Anchorage we discovered the Tahoe players were in the plane and got their autographs as well.

Watching baseball by the Midnight Sun is a never-to-be-forgotten experience, and the enthusiasm of the fans and players is unique.
