Looking for a Home

May 8, 2000, Daily News-Miner

By DERMOT COLE

The Alaska Goldpanners need at least 15 homes for the Boys of Summer starting the first week of June.

The Goldpanners are run by a nonprofit community group that relies on local homeowners to provide room and board for six weeks.

The Panner Parents program goes back to the 1960s, and the parents get family season passes to the games at Growden Memorial Park.

If you can help this effort call coordinator Shirley Stewart at 479-3586.

"We're still in touch with three of the players who stayed with us and are now playing professionally," she said.

Jason Giambi, Jose Cruz and Adam Kennedy are among the two dozen or so players who have stayed at the Stewart household.

Someone with an extra room, a hide-a-bed or even a motor home can help support the Goldpanner program by putting up a player.

The Athletes in Action team will also be based in Fairbanks this summer, so there will be home games by either the Panners or AIA nearly every day from June 15 to July 26. A $35 season pass will get you into all games.
